,000 tonnes of salt, and state-of-the-art weather monitoring, our highways team works around the clock to ensure your safety on over 2,000 miles of priority roads. From A and B roads to routes serving schools, hospitals, and transport hubs, we’ve got it covered.

Behind the Grit: Technology Meets Dedication

Gone are the days of guesswork. Today, our gritting operations use live data from 12 Lincolnshire weather stations, plus 8 from neighbouring counties, to monitor road temperatures and predict icy conditions. This allows us to salt roads with precision, saving money and reducing waste while ensuring safety.

  • Salt Science: Depending on the temperature, we adjust the amount of salt used:
    • -2°C = 7g per square metre
    • -5°C = 12g per square metre
    • Below -10°C or snow = 20g per square metre
  • Smart Spreading: Each route has its forecast, so we send the right gritters to the right places at the right time.

Our Network Resilience Manager Darrell Redford best summarised it: “This is an exact science, and it saves us a lot of cash while keeping roads safe for everyone.”

Supporting Our Communities

Beyond gritting, we’ve made it easier for communities to stay safe:

  • Grit Bins: These are available for residents to treat public paths and local roads.
  • Snow Clearance Assistance: Farmers and contractors can join our efforts during heavy snowfall.
  • Winter Readiness Resources: Stay informed with our gritting routes and updates through @LincsCC_roads on Twitter.
