Lincolnshire Conservatives reaffirmed their commitment to improving life for older residents at today’s landmark Ageing Better Conference at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln. The event, jointly hosted by Councillor Wendy Bowkett, Executive Councillor for Adult Care and Public Health, brought together experts, local leaders, and community organisations to focus on innovative solutions for an ageing population.

The conference highlighted Lincolnshire’s leadership in making the county a better place for people to live, work, and age. It built on the momentum from Lincolnshire’s partnership with the Centre for Ageing Better, showcasing how strategic planning and collaboration can ensure people thrive in later life.

Councillor Wendy Bowkett opened the event with a passionate message:

“Our county is already home to one of the UK’s most ageing populations, and we see this as an opportunity to lead the way nationally. From improving housing and transport to supporting health and independence, we’re committed to ensuring Lincolnshire is the best place to grow older.”

The conference explored key themes from Lincolnshire’s Public Health Annual Report, co-authored by Professor Derek Ward and Glen Garrod. Topics included housing accessibility, reducing loneliness, supporting physical activity, and improving transport in rural and coastal areas.

  • Housing Initiatives: Discussions on retrofitting homes for accessibility and creating supported living options to help older people live independently.
  • Health and Wellbeing: Presentations on increasing disability-free life expectancy through active travel, fitness programs, and mental health support.
  • Community Connections: Local organisations shared success stories of combating loneliness and improving digital inclusion among older residents.
  • Future Outlook: Plans to publish Lincolnshire’s first “State of Ageing Report” were unveiled, signalling a long-term commitment to tackling the challenges of an ageing population.

Leading the Way Nationally

Today’s conference solidified Lincolnshire’s reputation as a pioneer in the Ageing Better agenda. It celebrated Lincolnshire County Council’s role as the UK’s first Age-Friendly District Council and the county’s continued collaboration with the World Health Organisation’s Age-Friendly Framework.
